Wal-Mart Fundraiser Update

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

You might remember that Nikki and I set up a table at the local Wal-Mart in Plano a few weeks ago. It was hot as heck, but we did it for a good cause. We raised a little over $800 in our two days there, which greatly helped our 3-Day fundraising goal. Nikki’s daughter Taylor helped us both days by holding our signs and telling people that stopped by how much everything cost.

It was nice to have the support from people in our community, and a few people even said they came out just to see us based off of a post I made on the 3-Day message boards. That felt awesome! We sold ducks, bracelets, stickers, pins, and many people even gave us straight up donations. We met some wonderful survivors who told us their stories, some who had battled breast cancer many times. It was really inspirational, and really put into perspective for us why we are doing this. More women need to have stories of survival. We also had a lot of family members who had lost someone approach us and tell us their stories too.

Here are some of the photos from our two days. We are looking forward to our next fundraiser (a garage sale) with our new team members in two weeks:

Help Karen reach her goal!

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

A few months ago we had a new member join our team. Her name is Karen Pool. She explained that her mother-in-law was currently battling breast cancer. I immediately felt for her because I was never able to meet my mother-in-law due to this horrible disease. I could telll how much Karen loved hers, Billie. She explained that she was on a new kind of chemo, but not taking to it very well. I spread the word to Nikki and my two high school friends Courtney and Summer who also joined us, and we all sent our thoughts and prayers toward her family.

Earlier this week she sent us an e-mail with the sad news that Billie lost her battle with breast cancer on Friday. I hope she doesn’t mind me sharing it with you:

I just wanted to apologize to you guys for not attending the training walk and meetings for the past 2 months. My mother in law took a turn for the worse and it is with great sadness that I let you know that she passed away on Friday. Her funeral was Monday.

I am still planning on participating but I just want to say I am sorry in advance if I become this crying, emotional person during everything. She was so excited that I was doing this. She was so honored. Please keep me posted on the next training walks or any fund raising. I will be there. Thanks for the prayers and kind words in the last emails.

Please continue to pray for my husband. He is accepting it but it is hard for him to deal with everything right now. He is having to take care of her house, finances and anything else that is there to take care of. We are spending our evenings at her house starting this weekend to begin cleaning things out. This is going to be hard on all of us, especially my daughters. They already miss her so much.
Thanks for putting up with me right now. I appreciate the patience and kindness.

In Him,
Karen

We know that it is an especially difficult time for her and her family, and she still needs some help fundraising. Please help by making a donation to Karen. We are going to have several giveaways on the blog in hopes of helping her. Please see the post below, and we’ll be adding more soon. Thanks for reading and again for all of your support!

Pink for the Cure

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

It’s almost October, and that means the Pink for the Cure campaign 2008 will begin. Already you should be seeing products in your local grocery stores turning pink. I found some Betty Crocker chocolate chip cookies that I baked last week for a Special Olympics fundraiser at work:

Look for this product and more at a store near you, and help support the cure. Here is a little more about this program:

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Join Box Tops in supporting Pink for the Cure™, a nationwide initiative between General Mills and Susan G. Komen for the Cure to end breast cancer.

To show your support, look for and purchase these specially marked Box Tops Pink for the Cure™ products at your grocery store.

Participating Box Tops brands include Cheerios® Cereal, Pillsbury® Sweet Rolls, Pillsbury® Crescents, Pillsbury® Ready To Bake Cookies, Betty Crocker® Warm Delights® Desserts, Betty Crocker® Cookie Mix, Green Giant® Vegetables, Green Giant® Just for One!™ Vegetables, Hamburger Helper® Meal Mixes, Betty Crocker® Potatoes, Nature Valley® Granola Bars, and Cascadian Farm® Granola Bars. Don’t forget to clip the Box Tops from each package!

This year, General Mills is donating $2 million to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to support breast cancer research and awareness, and is launching a new website, www.PinkTogether.com. A place for breast cancer patients, survivors and their supporters to give and receive hope, www.PinkTogether.com is a social networking site whose mission is to help people connect as they share in a common struggle.

2008 Lean Cuisine Lunch Tote Giveway

Thursday, September 25th, 2008
Every year Lean Cuisine offers lunch totes that benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The 2008 totes are now available! They are $9.95 each and $5 of the price goes to the charity. I take a frozen meal to work most days of the week, and I admit I have quite a collection of cute lunch bags.

Nikki and I were both excited to see the new designs that came out this year and placed an order several weeks go. Want one? You can buy your own breast cancer lunch tote, or you can enter to win one of three right here! Simply leave a comment letting us know your favorite frozen meal that you’d carry in your new lunch tote, plus which of the three new designs you’d like to own for one entry. Stumble, Twitter, or post your own blog entry about our contest for five extra entries each. Make a minimum $5 donation to our teammate Karen for twenty extra entries. Let us know in your comment which things you did to earn entries so that we can keep track and give you credit. Comments will be closed on Saturday, October 17. We appreciate your support!

EDIT:
Thanks to Maja who made a donation to Karen’s 3-Day walk and earned 20 extra entries. We appreciate you!
