Wal-Mart Fundraiser

By Laurie | September 2, 2008

Nikki and I will be holding a fundraiser this Saturday and Sunday at the Plano Wal-Mart on HWY 75 and Spring Creek from 10AM to 6PM. We will be adopting out rubber duckies and selling breast cancer charm bracelets and pins. We will also have a raffle for gift certificates to restaurants, a hair salon, Save the TaTas merchandise and much more! Come out to support us as we try to complete our fundraising goals!

Project Pink

By Laurie | September 1, 2008

Check out this adorable ducky I designed as part of the Project Pink campain from Munchkin. I forwarded to friends and family, and each person that opens it earns 5 cents for Susan G. Komen. There are also real rubber duckies you can purchase from Munchkin, and celebrities such as Tori Spelling and Drew Lachey are auctioning their decorated versions off on Ebay.

You can create your own duck, or forward my version to earn more money for the charity. Have fun with it!

Stand Up to Cancer

By Laurie | August 28, 2008

Have you heard about Stand Up to Cancer? There will be a nationally televised broadcast on all three major networks on September 5 for the purpose of raising awareness and support for all different types of cancer research. Celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, Lance Armstrong, and Casey Afflect among many others are scheduled to appear at the event. There is also an entire online community created for the charity that includes celebrity hosted PSAs.

You may have also heard the song, “Just Stand Up,” which is an all-star chairty single benefiting the chairty. The debut will be on the live telecast. It was produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface and features Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes, and Carrie Underwood. It will be available on iTunes starting September 2. It’s like the the new Millenium eqivilent of “We Are the World” from 1985.

There is also an online feature where you can create a star in memory of a friend or loved one that has passed away from cancer called The Constellation. If you make a donation, you can launch a star into the virtual gallaxy. I sent one for my mother-in-law Arveta, who I am walking in memory of during the Breast Cancer 3-Day. I also sent one for Krista’s Cory, who passed away earlier this year.

Check out Stand Up for Cancer’s website to find out how you can help, and watch the show next Friday night.

2008 DFW 3-Day EXPO

By Laurie | August 24, 2008

Nikki and I participated in the 3-Day EXPO and training walk yesterday. We had intended to walk the 12 mile route, but decided to do the 6 mile instead. I think we both realized we have a lot more training to do before being ready for the actual event. Thank goodness it is in November when it will not be so HOT. We had a good time, and met some nice people along the route and at the event.

We both purchased some new socks, a t-shirt, sent letters to ourself and each other that will be delivered at camp, and learned what to pack and how to pack. We also huddled inside a tent together. I’ve never been camping in a tent, so it’s going to be an interesting experience to say the least. We also went to a few of the sessions that talked about what to wear and how to prevent blisters. I think we got some good information from each. There was also a dark room with a white tent that people had written messages to their loved ones on. It was very emotional and we both cried. I already know I’m going to be a wreck at the actual event.

There are a few more photos too, but for some reason they didn’t upload to my account. I will add them soon. Happy Walking!

EXPO Time!

By Laurie | August 22, 2008

Nikki and I are headed out tomorrow to the 3-Day Expo in Grand Prairie. We’ll be up at the crack of dawn to participate in a pre-Expo training walk that will total 12 miles! We are both excited and scared. I think the activities at the EXPO will all make it worth it though. It sounds like a really fun afternoon. We will take lots of pictures and share stories when we get back. Wish us luck!

It’s the 2008 Breast Cancer 3-Day Expo!

Get in The 3-Day spirit at the Expo. It’s an exciting and educating gathering of Breast Cancer 3-Day walkers, crew members, volunteers and others involved in the fight against breast cancer. It’s like a big 3-hour pep rally for the Breast Cancer 3-Day community, to get you inspired, informed and ready to hit the ground walking. Wear your milestone badge, and reward yourself with the “attended Expo” sticker. Be sure to bring your friends and family to enjoy the fun with you!

There will be a 6-to-12-mile training walk starting and ending at the Ruthe Jackson Center. This route will loop back to where the route began at approximately 6 miles giving you the opportunity to rest and continue on if you choose to do so. The walk will be led by a volunteer training walk leader and all official 3-Day training walk rules apply. Please come prepared with water and snacks to keep you energized. Training walk RSVPs have reached capacity.
